PRESS RELEASE – CLAUDIO CASTAGNETTA

The Castagnetta Case : The National Congress of Italian-Canadians is calling for a public inquiry

MONTREAL, August 25, 2008 – On Friday, August 22, 2008, the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions decided not to bring any charges against the police officers and prison guards responsible for Castagnetta at the time of his death.

The National Congress of Italian-Canadians (Quebec Region) demands that the circumstances surrounding the death of Claudio Castagnetta in September 2007 be investigated further.  The arrest, detention and death of Castagnetta took place under the most ambiguous of circumstances.  In fact, according to several witnesses, Castagnetta was in a state of mental distress at the time of his arrest.  Moreover, police officials shot Castagnetta a reported three or four times with a taser gun and detained him more than twenty four hours before providing any medical attention.

According to Me Antonio Sciascia, president of the Congress, “In the absence of criminal proceedings, only an independent public inquiry would shed new light on the Castagnetta case.” The National Congress of Italian-Canadians therefore joins AGIR (l’Alliance des Groupes d’Intervention pour le Rétablissement en santé mentale) and APUR (l’Association des Personnes Utilisatrices des services de santé mentale de la région de Québec) in demanding that a public inquiry be held.

According to Me Sciascia, the Minister of Justice and Public Safety, Jacques Dupuis, should intervene and ask the coroner in charge of the case, Andrée Kronstrom, to launch a public inquiry immediately.

The Italian community of the province of Quebec is very distraught by this case.  Moreover, the ambassador of Italy has already expressed to Prime Minister Jean Charest his dissatisfaction with the handling of this case. Consequently, The National Congress of Italian-Canadians deems it absolutely necessary that a public inquiry be held in order to shed light on this tragic incident.
